Tangier sits at a geographical crossroads that gives it a climate unlike any other Moroccan city. Positioned where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean at the Strait of Gibraltar, it catches weather systems from both directions, which means it tends to be cooler, cloudier, and considerably wetter than Marrakech or Fez. If you're expecting the bone-dry, sun-blasted Morocco of popular imagination, Tangier will likely surprise you. The year divides fairly cleanly into a wet season and a dry one. November through March accounts for the bulk of the rainfall; November alone typically delivers around 135mm, December close to 130mm, with temperatures that hover in the mild rather than cold range, rarely dropping below 8°C (47°F) at night. These months have a distinctly northwestern European feel: grey skies, Atlantic gusts, rain that can arrive in proper squalls. Tangier almost never sees frost. A good winter day, and there are many, can be lovely, with the kind of crisp, clear light that makes the Strait look its most cinematic. From June through September the rain all but disappears, with July and August averaging under 3mm for the month. Temperatures peak at around 28°C (82°F) in those two months, which by global standards is quite moderate for a beach city in high summer. The Atlantic keeps things from getting oppressive; you're unlikely to encounter the forty-degree heat of the Moroccan interior. What Tangier does get in summer is a steady breeze off the water, which makes the outdoor cafes in the Kasbah and the medina streets reasonably comfortable even at midday. Humidity holds around 70 percent year-round. Worth noting. It gives summer days a mildly muggy edge and winter days that particular damp chill that seeps into old stone buildings.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach
June through early September is the sweet spot. The water is at its warmest by July and August, the skies are reliably clear, and Tangier's beaches, the long stretch running toward Cap Spartel, and Merkala closer to the city, are at their most inviting. Just know that this is also peak season for Moroccan vacationers and the diaspora returning from Europe for summer, so crowds are real and accommodation books early.
Cultural
April and May tend to work best. The spring light is excellent, the medina and Kasbah are much less crowded than in summer, and temperatures are comfortable for extended walking. Highs around 19°C to 21°C (66°F to 71°F). The lower rainfall compared to winter means you can move through Tangier's streets without constantly watching the sky. October is nearly as good and often overlooked.
Adventure
October and November offer something specific: the landscape around Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules becomes dramatically green after the first autumn rains, and the surrounding hills are good for walking before the wet season peaks. Early November in particular tends to mix dry sunny days with moody Atlantic weather that many hikers find more interesting than relentless summer sun.
Budget
The shoulder months of March, April, and October are the practical answer. Accommodation and tours tend to be more affordable outside the July-August peak, the weather is broadly cooperative, and Tangier has enough going on year-round that you're not missing the essential experience by avoiding the most expensive weeks.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Tangier.

Year-Round Essentials
a light waterproof layer
Even in summer the Atlantic can produce brief showers, and the wind off the Strait has a surprising bite on overcast days. A packable rain jacket takes almost no space and removes a significant source of anxiety.
Sun protection
Non-negotiable from May through October: the combination of Mediterranean light and Atlantic glare off the water is more intense than it feels, and first-day sunburn is a reliable rite of passage for visitors who underestimate it.
Comfortable walking shoes with decent grip
Matter year-round, since the medina's cobblestones and sloped lanes become slippery after rain and no amount of style compensates for a twisted ankle on wet stone stairs.
A daypack
Worth having for excursions to Cap Spartel, the Caves of Hercules, or day trips toward Chefchaouen, where you'll want to carry water and a layer.
A power adapter for Type C or Type E plugs
Essential. Morocco runs on 220V and 50Hz, so most North American and British devices need both a plug adapter and a voltage converter.
A small cash supply in the local currency
Helps in the medina market and smaller cafes where card machines are unreliable.
winter
Clothing
a mid-weight jacket, a couple of layerable sweaters, long trousers
Footwear
waterproof footwear
Accessories
A scarf
Layering Tip
The cold is damp rather than sharp, which often feels more penetrating than the thermometer suggests.
spring and autumn
Clothing
Light layers that you can add or remove as the day progresses
Accessories
A light wrap or pashmina
Layering Tip
Work best. A long-sleeve shirt in the morning, down to a t-shirt by early afternoon, back to a jacket by evening.
summer
Clothing
breathable natural fabrics: linen and cotton, Modest clothing appropriate for walking through the medina and Kasbah, a light long-sleeved shirt for evening
Plug Type
Type C or Type E
Voltage
220V and 50Hz
